Eyelid Surgery Q & A

What is eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery can have medical or cosmetic purposes. As you age, the skin around your eyes stretches and the muscles supporting your eyelids weaken. This can cause excess fat to gather above and/or below your eyelids, leading to droopy upper eyelids, bags under your eyes, and sagging eyebrows.

In addition to making you look older, drooping skin around your eyes can interfere with your vision. Eyelid surgery eliminates visual obstructions and makes your eyes appear more alert.

When would I need eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery may be right for you if drooping or sagging eyelids cause medical or cosmetic concerns. At Tampa Bay Eye and Facial Aesthetics, Dr. Creekmore performs eyelid surgery to treat adults with:

  • Excess skin on the upper eyelid that partially blocks vision
  • Excess skin on the lower eyelid
  • Saggy or droopy eyelids
  • Bags under your eyes
  • Blepharitis, which is eyelid inflammation
  • Uneven eyelids
  • Tired eye

Your insurance may cover eyelid surgery if it addresses a condition that causes vision impairment. Eyelid surgery to improve your appearance is elective.

What are the different types of eyelid surgery?

Various types of eyelid surgery include:

Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty is the most common type of cosmetic eye surgery. Sometimes called an eye lift, this procedure treats issues like fatty deposits that cause puffy eyelids, bags under the eyes, excess skin in the lower eyelid, and drooping eyelids.

Upper/lower eyelid surgery

Upper/lower eyelid surgery treats swelling around the eye. The procedure involves removing, repositioning, or replacing the fat pads in your upper and/or lower eyelids.

Droopy eyelid surgery

The medical term for droopy upper eyelids is ptosis. Dr. Creekmore surgically tightens the muscles around the eyelid to improve your vision and appearance

What is recovery like after eyelid surgery?

It’s common to experience bruising and swelling after eyelid surgery, but cool compresses can help. Most instances of bruising and swelling fade completely within two weeks of surgery.

You should be able to return to normal activities 7-10 days after your procedure. Dr. Creekmore provides you with detailed instructions on how to care for your eyes at home.
